University’s New Tiverton Gym

POSTED Wednesday 5 June 2019

In September 2019, the University of Birmingham will open Tiverton Gym in Selly Oak.

The Birmingham City Council’s Tiverton Pool & Fitness facility has been re-developed into three-rooms offering a gym on the doorstep of students who live in Selly Oak.

The old large and small pools have been filled and one will offer a free weights room containing eight lifting platforms, four benches, ski ergos and a medicine ball throwing wall.

The main room (empty) in Tiverton Gym before any equipment has been installed. The old spectator seating from the swimming room remains on the upper balcony.

The old pool has been filled and the spectator seating remains around the balcony above the new gym floor.

The other pool area will be transformed into a gym floor containing cardio equipment, resistance machines, plate loaded equipment, dumbbells and a quaint reference to the deep end of the pool will offer space for functional training. The spectator seating for the old pool remains as a character feature around the balcony of the new gym, giving the room a remarkable juxtaposition of history and modernity.

For students who remember the gym in the old Tiverton Pool & Fitness, this area has been renovated and will be used for a stretching area and a cable room with a number of cable machines and pulleys.

Tiverton Gym is designed to offer a training environment for those who are looking to achieve results quickly and effectively without distractions such as equipment with integrated TV screens, internet and simulation landscapes.

The focus is on the quality of the equipment for your workout, there will be Technogym machines, Pullum and Eleiko weights.

One of the key differences with Tiverton Gym is, although University of Birmingham staff will be available within Tiverton Gym, members here cannot access services such as personal training, personal programmes and muscle and weight analysis which are all available at the Sport & Fitness club on campus.

Memberships will be single-site only due to the level of demand. We will continue to update you on the Tiverton Gym development, sharing images and videos of the facility once the equipment is on site.

Opening times and off peak times for Tiverton Gym will be confirmed closer to the time of opening, before memberships go on sale.
