SPORT & FITNESS UPDATES ON CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19)
This page will give you all the latest coronavirus updates in relation to University of Birmingham Sport & Fitness’ facilities.
Last updated: 5 January 2020
5 January 2020: The Sport & Fitness club, Tiverton Gym and all our outdoor facilities (including the athletics track), remain closed due to the national lockdown. The Government have suggested that restrictions will be reviewed in mid-February, so we will keep our members updated via email and further updates will be posted on this page as and when we receive new information.
30 December 2020: Sadly it does not come as a surprise that Birmingham has been placed into Tier 4. This therefore means we have to close all our indoor and outdoor facilities temporarily from 10.30pm this evening. We will keep you updated regularly via email and continue to update this page regularly, so you are able to keep track of any changes or updates.
17 December 2020: The Sport & Fitness club will operate under Tier 3 restrictions until Sunday 3 January. We will be in contact with members on Monday 4 January to provide an update, and advise you on any changes we may be able to make following any subsequent Government announcements in the new year. This means classes will remain outdoors only, and squash can only be played individually or with members of your household until Sunday 3 January. If we are able to offer indoor classes in the new year, these would resume from Tuesday 5 January, subject to Government and UK Active guidance.
14 December 2020: Tiverton Gym will close for Christmas at 11.30pm on Tuesday 15 December and will re-open at 9am on Monday 4 January. Whilst Tiverton gym is closed, we have enabled those members to book sessions at Sport & Fitness gym.
11 December 2020: During the University’s Christmas vacation, from 14 December – 3 January 2021, members are not restricted to one booking per area, per day. You may book and attend as many sessions as you wish. This is because many of our student members have gone home for Christmas, so there is a significant reduction in usage. Please note, even if you have booked back-to-back sessions, you must vacate Sport & Fitness between each session to ensure the area can be sanitised. You will also be required to swipe into the building again at reception. This is to avoid incurring a no-show penalty fine, as our system will not register your attendance to the second session if you do not follow this process.
30 November 2020: Members and class users have now been emailed regarding our re-opening of Sport & Fitness and Tiverton Gym on Wednesday 2 December. From Tuesday 1 December, you will be able to book your sessions up to seven days in advance.
As a result of Birmingham being placed in Tier 3, there are a few implications to our services at Sport & Fitness in addition to the safety measures which were in place before lockdown, such as the closure of changing rooms and lockers. The Government have advised that local tiers will be reviewed on 16 December 2020, and we will be in touch with members again as and when that information is available.
The steam room and sauna must remain closed, and we are not able to offer any group exercise based classes such as AquaFit.
England Squash confirmed their latest guidance today (Monday) which details that squash may be played individually or with people in your households, as well as in a junior or education environment in Tier 3 areas.
Sadly we are not permitted to offer indoor group exercise classes under Tier 3 restrictions, however, we will be launching a new outdoor class timetable from Wednesday 2 December.
Outdoor classes will run throughout December, even if Birmingham goes back into Tier 2. We’ll update you again before 1 January 2021 to advise whether indoor classes will be available again from January.
25 November 2020: Following the Government’s announcement on 23 November, we can confirm the Sport & Fitness club and Tiverton Gym will re-open on Wednesday 2 December 2020. Booking will re-open on Tuesday 1 December 2020. If you have an outdoor booking or sports club membership, you will receive specific information regarding these.
10 November 2020: Introducing…the Sport & Fitness Home Workout Hub!
To get our members through the next few weeks of the national lockdown, we have once again called on our fantastic instructors to share their pre-recorded workout videos to provide you with a range of options for keeping fit and healthy. There will also be a weekly timetable of free live classes in our new Home Workout Hub. Simply sign up using the Registration Form online where you will be given access to Vimeo for existing classes, and Zoom for live workouts.
5 November 2020: Sport & Fitness, Tiverton Gym and all our outdoor facilities are now closed in line with the Government’s national lockdown restrictions.
3 November 2020: Following the Government’s announcement on Saturday that all leisure facilities must close on Thursday 5 November 2020, the Sport & Fitness club, Tiverton Gym and our outdoor facilities will close on Wednesday 4 November 2020. Sport & Fitness will close at 10.30pm, and Tiverton Gym at 11pm.
We are continuing to monitor the latest guidance and if there are any further changes we will contact you directly. At this stage we are planning to re-open on Wednesday 2 December 2020 subject to any further national or local restrictions.
Until Thursday 5 November, all our facilities and services which have re-opened will remain available to book, so please continue to visit us and follow the safety guidelines.
We will keep all our members and users updated regularly via email, and will post the latest updates on this page. Thank you for your support and understanding during these times, and we hope you stay safe and healthy during the lockdown.
2 November 2020: Following the Government’s announcement of a new national lockdown starting on Thursday, we are considering the implications on our facilities, services and elite sport programmes. We will be in contact with our members and users as soon as possible. Updates will also be posted on this page, so do check back for the latest updates. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
22 October 2020: Members who have a junior linked to their account should have received an email today with instructions on how to restart their junior’s membership from 1 November 2020 if they want to. If the request to restart the membership form is not submitted, your junior membership will remain frozen until 2 January 2021 when it will automatically restart. If you have any questions about junior memberships, please contact email@example.com.
20 October 2020: Thank you for your patience regarding badminton bookings whilst guidelines were reviewed. Badminton bookings are now available for members to book via the website or app. Members must only play with people from the same household, and any guests must also be members.
19 October 2020: Thank you for your patience regarding squash bookings over the weekend. We can now confirm that squash courts are available to book but only for the following:
- To train or play as an individual
- To play with a member of your household or support bubble. Please note, the second player must also be a squash member of Sport & Fitness and book their session with you online, in advance, via the Guest Bookings section.
Please ensure you are familiar and up to date with all of the England Squash return to play guidelines. Full England Squash guidelines can be found on their website.
16 October 2020: We are sorry to inform you that members in clubs in tier 2 areas are no longer permitted to play full court squash (or sides) with anyone other than those living in their household. As a result, we are temporarily suspending all squash court bookings whilst we investigate the guidelines further and establish how to implement these safely in Sport & Fitness. Similarly, organised badminton can now also only be played with members of your household, so we are temporarily suspending all badminton court bookings. Squash bookings have all been cancelled, if you have a badminton booking, a member of our team will be in contact soon. You will not be able to make any future bookings for squash or badminton until further notice.
9 October 2020: Members and class voucher users can now book and attend multiple classes per day. Please note, if there are 15 minutes or less in-between the end time of your first class and the start time of your second class, you are able to move directly from one studio to the other, following the one-way system. If there are more than 15 minutes in-between the classes, you must exit the building and rejoin the queue outside to avoid incurring a £10 no-show penalty fine.
6 October 2020: From tomorrow, 7 October, we have made changes to our booking system for gym sessions (at both Sport & Fitness and Tiverton Gym) so that you can only book a gym slot during our operational hours. Sessions will be visible on the app and website from midnight on the day but you will not be able to book until the facility opening hours (visit our Opening Hours page for these times). This change is to ensure that more popular session times do not become fully booked during anti-social hours, and you will still be able to cancel sessions at any time of the day.
24 September 2020: From Thursday 24 September, there are QR codes on display outside all our sport facilities, these are to be used with the new NHS Covid-19 app. Download the app today and you’ll be able to scan the QR before you enter the facility. Find out more information about downloading the NHS Covid-19 app here.
23 September 2020: Following the Government’s announcement on restrictions for indoor sport, we are working with national Governing Bodies to clarify the exact impact this will have. Please bear with us whilst we establish the detail of the new restrictions.
11 September 2020: Tiverton Gym memberships are available to buy now. Sport & Fitness membership sales will be staggered; returning students (anyone who isn’t a new student starting this year), will be able to buy their membership online for Sport & Fitness from Monday 14 September at 10am. 9 September 2020: The recent Government update on restricting social gatherings to a maximum of six people will not affect your usage of Sport & Fitness or Tiverton Gym. Our safety guidelines remain in place, please familiarise yourself with these guidelines on the Stay Safe page of the website.

This was extremely welcome news, and following the University’s permission, we will plan to re-open the pool, gym and squash courts on Monday 10 August.
Classes will resume at Sport & Fitness from Monday 17 August, so in the meantime, we will continue to run a virtual class timetable, available by joining the Virtual Sport & Fitness Club Facebook group.

9 July 2020: We welcome today’s Government announcement allowing gyms and swimming pools to re-open from 25 July.
The UoB Sport & Fitness team have been working for some time on re-opening plans that put the safety and wellbeing of our members and staff as of utmost importance. Once we have the green light from the University, we can start to roll out that plan, which will start with unfurloughing and training staff, thoroughly cleaning every bit of the building and its contents, and putting required safety measures in place prior to opening. We will keep you informed of progress via email and social media, and can’t wait to welcome you back.

As the London Marathon was due to be this Sunday, and they currently hold the record for the most money raised for a single day event (£67million), 2.6 challenges all over the country are helping to contribute to the goal of beating this target, all around the theme of ‘2.6’ or ’26’.
On Sunday, we are hosting two dedicated classes: GRIT at 10am, and Pilates at 11am, both 26 minutes each, and we invite you to join us. Simply access the class videos through our Facebook group, and participate, donate to a charity of choice if you can, and share your progress on the group!
