This page will give you all the latest coronavirus updates in relation to University of Birmingham Sport & Fitness’ facilities.

Last updated: 27 August 2021

27 August 2021: New Stay Safe guidance for Sport & Fitness and Tiverton Gym will be issued to all members and users in early September.

16 July 2021: Earlier this week the Prime Minister confirmed that Step 4 of the Covid-19 roadmap will come into effect from Monday 19 July. Whilst this final step sees the ending of the majority of legal restrictions including social distancing and wearing face coverings, we are requesting that you continue using Sport & Fitness in exactly the same way from Monday 19 July, whilst our risk assessments and processes are reviewed with the University.

18 June 2021: From Monday 28 June, we are making the following positive changes:

  • you will no longer need to book sessions for the gym or the pool
  • we will be re-opening all changing rooms for members
  • the gym will become one area again where you can move between the floors during your workout
  • lockers will be available (please collect a locker band from reception next week if you do not have one)
  • we are slowly re-introducing 50-metre pool sessions
  • the steam room and sauna will be available with restrictions

Read more about the changes from 28 June

1 June 2021: Unfortunately we have had a number of cases in which members are not adhering to the booking rules in place, and either booking multiple sessions for the same area in one day, or booking and not attending / cancelling their session. This is unfair to other members who are waiting for a space to become free or would prefer a different session.

If you book multiple sessions for the same area on the same day, do not remove existing multiple bookings, or book a session and either don’t attend or do not cancel it, your booking rights will be reduced for 7 days, meaning you will only be able to book 24 hours in advance of your session.

Although the gym is split into three areas – free weights, main gym and Arena 3 – you may only book one of these areas per day.

In order to ensure fair use of the Sport & Fitness club, we have a fine-based system, whereby anyone not adhering to the rules either by booking multiple slots on the same day or not attending (or not cancelling in advance) their booked sessions, will receive a £10 fine (per breach) on their account.

As some areas are reaching capacity, we will be monitoring duplicate bookings and adding penalties where applicable. Any fines incurred must be paid before you will be able to book any more slots.

Please ensure you are familiar with the bookings rules, under the tab on our Stay Safe page.

17 May 2021: As of today, the following changes have been made to our provision of facilities and activities:

  • Indoor classes are back: You can book up to seven days in advance and can book and attend as many classes (indoor and outdoor) per day as you wish.
  • Squash: From Monday 17 May, players from different households will be able to play squash as normal.  Please note, both players must be a squash member (a membership which includes squash) of UoB Sport & Fitness. Members who don’t have squash in their membership, plus juniors, will be able to book and play from next Monday (24 May).
  • Racket sports: Badminton and outdoor tennis will all be available for members and non-members to book with Pay & Go from Monday 17 May. All players must book individually and you can book multiple sessions per day.

11 May 2021: Following the Government’s confirmation that England will progress to the next step of their roadmap for lifting lockdown next week, we can confirm that indoor classes will resume from Monday 17 May. The timetable will be available online from 12 May, and booking for indoor classes will be available from 12pm on Friday 14 May.

7 May 2021: From Monday 10 May, we will be asking all members to remove their shoes before entering the poolside area. This is to ensure the area is kept to a high standard of cleanliness. Please remove your shoes at the bottom of the staircase, there are seats and benches provided if needed. Then walk barefoot or in clean indoor flip flops, to your changing area on poolside. Please ensure you are wearing a face covering until you are ready to start your swim, and be mindful to maintain a two-metre social distance from others at all times.

12 April 2021: We understand students are awaiting an update from the Government regarding non-practical courses returning to campus after the Easter break, and as a result, we have received requests from some of our student members to keep their membership frozen or be refunded beyond 12 April. Unfortunately, until we receive an update from the Government, we are not able to advise you on these matters more specifically. Please be assured, as soon as there is an update from the Government, we will be in contact with all our students to let you know the next steps.

12 April 2021: Tiverton Gym and Sport & Fitness’ gym, pool and squash courts are now open to members with a valid advance booking. Outdoor classes also resume today with Tai Chi at 10.30am on the blue hockey pitch opposite the Sport & Fitness club entrance. Outdoor classes are available to inclusive members with a valid booking or via Pay & Go for all other members and non-members.

8 April 2021: We are aware there have been some technical issues regarding booking sessions for some members. Please note, if you buy a new membership to start on Monday, you will be unable to book a session prior to this start date as your account is not ‘live’. Bookings will become available on your start date.

8 April 2021: Bookings for the gym, pool, squash, and outdoor classes will be available from 12pm on Thursday 8 April via the website and UB Sport & Fitness app. Please note, you will not be able to visit Sport & Fitness or Tiverton Gym without a valid advance booking.

7 April 2021: Student members of Sport & Fitness and Tiverton Gym should have received an email this afternoon regarding our facilities re-opening and their membership refund (for the period of closure due to national lockdown). If you haven’t received this email, please check your junk / spam and contact if you have any further questions. To claim your refund you need to complete this form, using the unique code given to you in your email.

6 April 2021: The Government have confirmed that indoor leisure facilities are able to re-open as planned, therefore, the Sport & Fitness club, and Tiverton Gym, will re-open (with restrictions on some activities such as squash and classes) with their normal operating hours from Monday 12 April.

2 April 2021: Community and staff members of both Sport & Fitness and Tiverton Gym should have received an email today with an update on their membership status, and depending on your membership category, there may be some action required by you before you return. Please check your emails (and junk / spam if you haven’t received an email), and contact if you have any further questions. Bookings for the gym, pool, squash and outdoor classes will be available from 12pm on Thursday 8 April via the website and UB Sport & Fitness app. Please note, you will not be able to visit Sport & Fitness or Tiverton Gym without a valid advance booking.

30 March 2021: If you had class vouchers on your account when we closed in December 2020, and you would like to attend outdoor classes between Monday 12 April and Sunday 16 May, please complete the ‘reactivate your vouchers’ form by 12pm on Thursday 8 April, and our team will reinstate your vouchers to your account. This is a manual process, and will be completed by 5pm on Friday 9 April to allow you to book classes in advance.

29 March 2021: There will be no live classes on the Home Workout Hub between Friday 2 April and Wednesday 7 April inclusive. Live classes will resume on Zoom on Thursday 8 April. On demand classes are still available on the Home Workout Hub Vimeo channel. Sign up for the Home Workout Hub for free.

26 March 2021: From 12 April (date subject to change), England Squash’s guidelines are that squash courts can open for use by individuals or same household groups. View the full England Squash guidance on their website. Updates for our members will be posted on the Stay Safe page of our website under the ‘Squash and Badminton’ tab.

23 February 2021: Following the release of the Government’s proposed roadmap for lifting restrictions yesterday, we learned that indoor facilities may be able to re-open from Monday 12 April. We are extremely happy that a re-opening date is in sight, and we very much look forward to welcoming our members back. Please note, not all facilities and services will be able to resume on the same date; we are working through the specific guidance from the Government, UK Active and national governing bodies. We will keep all our members informed as we get closer to that date and receive clarity on what our exact opening date will be.

4 February 2021: Students who have a Sport & Fitness or Tiverton Gym membership, class vouchers or a sports club membership should have received an email to their student email address today. The email explains that a pro-rata refund will be available, starting from when the second national lockdown began on Thursday 5 November 2020 (some club refunds will precede this date due to NGB restrictions) and including any subsequent weeks the facilities have been closed for due to national restrictions. Refunds will be offered once we can be confident that the facilities will not need to close again and students have been permitted by Government to return to University. There is a frequently asked questions page on the website, this will be updated as and when there is more information available on student refunds.

5 January 2021: The Sport & Fitness club, Tiverton Gym and all our outdoor facilities (including the athletics track), remain closed due to the national lockdown. The Government have suggested that restrictions will be reviewed in mid-February, so we will keep our members updated via email and further updates will be posted on this page as and when we receive new information.

30 December 2020: Sadly it does not come as a surprise that Birmingham has been placed into Tier 4. This therefore means we have to close all our indoor and outdoor facilities temporarily from 10.30pm this evening. We will keep you updated regularly via email and continue to update this page regularly, so you are able to keep track of any changes or updates.

17 December 2020: The Sport & Fitness club will operate under Tier 3 restrictions until Sunday 3 January. We will be in contact with members on Monday 4 January to provide an update, and advise you on any changes we may be able to make following any subsequent Government announcements in the new year. This means classes will remain outdoors only, and squash can only be played individually or with members of your household until Sunday 3 January. If we are able to offer indoor classes in the new year, these would resume from Tuesday 5 January, subject to Government and UK Active guidance.

14 December 2020: Tiverton Gym will close for Christmas at 11.30pm on Tuesday 15 December and will re-open at 9am on Monday 4 January. Whilst Tiverton gym is closed, we have enabled those members to book sessions at Sport & Fitness gym.

11 December 2020: During the University’s Christmas vacation, from 14 December – 3 January 2021, members are not restricted to one booking per area, per day. You may book and attend as many sessions as you wish. This is because many of our student members have gone home for Christmas, so there is a significant reduction in usage. Please note, even if you have booked back-to-back sessions, you must vacate Sport & Fitness between each session to ensure the area can be sanitised. You will also be required to swipe into the building again at reception. This is to avoid incurring a no-show penalty fine, as our system will not register your attendance to the second session if you do not follow this process.

30 November 2020: Members and class users have now been emailed regarding our re-opening of Sport & Fitness and Tiverton Gym on Wednesday 2 December. From Tuesday 1 December, you will be able to book your sessions up to seven days in advance.

As a result of Birmingham being placed in Tier 3, there are a few implications to our services at Sport & Fitness in addition to the safety measures which were in place before lockdown, such as the closure of changing rooms and lockers. The Government have advised that local tiers will be reviewed on 16 December 2020, and we will be in touch with members again as and when that information is available.

The steam room and sauna must remain closed, and we are not able to offer any group exercise based classes such as AquaFit.

England Squash confirmed their latest guidance today (Monday) which details that squash may be played individually or with people in your households, as well as in a junior or education environment in Tier 3 areas.

Sadly we are not permitted to offer indoor group exercise classes under Tier 3 restrictions, however, we will be launching a new outdoor class timetable from Wednesday 2 December.

Outdoor classes will run throughout December, even if Birmingham goes back into Tier 2. We’ll update you again before 1 January 2021 to advise whether indoor classes will be available again from January.

25 November 2020: Following the Government’s announcement on 23 November, we can confirm the Sport & Fitness club and Tiverton Gym will re-open on Wednesday 2 December 2020. Booking will re-open on Tuesday 1 December 2020. If you have an outdoor booking or sports club membership, you will receive specific information regarding these.

10 November 2020: Introducing…the Sport & Fitness Home Workout Hub!

To get our members through the next few weeks of the national lockdown, we have once again called on our fantastic instructors to share their pre-recorded workout videos to provide you with a range of options for keeping fit and healthy. There will also be a weekly timetable of free live classes in our new Home Workout Hub. Simply sign up using the Registration Form online where you will be given access to Vimeo for existing classes, and Zoom for live workouts.

5 November 2020: Sport & Fitness, Tiverton Gym and all our outdoor facilities are now closed in line with the Government’s national lockdown restrictions.

3 November 2020: Following the Government’s announcement on Saturday that all leisure facilities must close on Thursday 5 November 2020, the Sport & Fitness club, Tiverton Gym and our outdoor facilities will close on Wednesday 4 November 2020. Sport & Fitness will close at 10.30pm, and Tiverton Gym at 11pm.

We are continuing to monitor the latest guidance and if there are any further changes we will contact you directly. At this stage we are planning to re-open on Wednesday 2 December 2020 subject to any further national or local restrictions.

Until Thursday 5 November, all our facilities and services which have re-opened will remain available to book, so please continue to visit us and follow the safety guidelines.

We will keep all our members and users updated regularly via email, and will post the latest updates on this page. Thank you for your support and understanding during these times, and we hope you stay safe and healthy during the lockdown.

2 November 2020: Following the Government’s announcement of a new national lockdown starting on Thursday, we are considering the implications on our facilities, services and elite sport programmes. We will be in contact with our members and users as soon as possible. Updates will also be posted on this page, so do check back for the latest updates. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

22 October 2020: Members who have a junior linked to their account should have received an email today with instructions on how to restart their junior’s membership from 1 November 2020 if they want to. If the request to restart the membership form is not submitted, your junior membership will remain frozen until 2 January 2021 when it will automatically restart. If you have any questions about junior memberships, please contact

20 October 2020: Thank you for your patience regarding badminton bookings whilst guidelines were reviewed. Badminton bookings are now available for members to book via the website or app. Members must only play with people from the same household, and any guests must also be members.

19 October 2020: Thank you for your patience regarding squash bookings over the weekend. We can now confirm that squash courts are available to book but only for the following:

  • To train or play as an individual
  • To play with a member of your household or support bubble. Please note, the second player must also be a squash member of Sport & Fitness and book their session with you online, in advance, via the Guest Bookings section.

Please ensure you are familiar and up to date with all of the England Squash return to play guidelines. Full England Squash guidelines can be found on their website.

16 October 2020: We are sorry to inform you that members in clubs in tier 2 areas are no longer permitted to play full court squash (or sides) with anyone other than those living in their household. As a result, we are temporarily suspending all squash court bookings whilst we investigate the guidelines further and establish how to implement these safely in Sport & Fitness. Similarly, organised badminton can now also only be played with members of your household, so we are temporarily suspending all badminton court bookings. Squash bookings have all been cancelled, if you have a badminton booking, a member of our team will be in contact soon. You will not be able to make any future bookings for squash or badminton until further notice.

9 October 2020: Members and class voucher users can now book and attend multiple classes per day. Please note, if there are 15 minutes or less in-between the end time of your first class and the start time of your second class, you are able to move directly from one studio to the other, following the one-way system. If there are more than 15 minutes in-between the classes, you must exit the building and rejoin the queue outside to avoid incurring a £10 no-show penalty fine.

6 October 2020: From tomorrow, 7 October, we have made changes to our booking system for gym sessions (at both Sport & Fitness and Tiverton Gym) so that you can only book a gym slot during our operational hours. Sessions will be visible on the app and website from midnight on the day but you will not be able to book until the facility opening hours (visit our Opening Hours page for these times). This change is to ensure that more popular session times do not become fully booked during anti-social hours, and you will still be able to cancel sessions at any time of the day.

24 September 2020: From Thursday 24 September, there are QR codes on display outside all our sport facilities, these are to be used with the new NHS Covid-19 app. Download the app today and you’ll be able to scan the QR before you enter the facility. Find out more information about downloading the NHS Covid-19 app here.

23 September 2020: Following the Government’s announcement on restrictions for indoor sport, we are working with national Governing Bodies to clarify the exact impact this will have. Please bear with us whilst we establish the detail of the new restrictions.

11 September 2020: Tiverton Gym memberships are available to buy now. Sport & Fitness membership sales will be staggered; returning students (anyone who isn’t a new student starting this year), will be able to buy their membership online for Sport & Fitness from Monday 14 September at 10am. New students will be able to buy their membership for Sport & Fitness online from Wednesday 16 September. This is to manage traffic on the website, we will ensure fair distribution of memberships across new and returning students. Student memberships must be purchased online, you will not be able to buy a membership from reception. Memberships are subject to availability.

10 September 2020: Tiverton Gym will be open from today. Please note, there are restricted opening hours in place until Monday 14 September. Please ensure you have a valid membership and pre-book your gym session before visiting.

9 September 2020: The recent Government update on restricting social gatherings to a maximum of six people will not affect your usage of Sport & Fitness or Tiverton Gym. Our safety guidelines remain in place, please familiarise yourself with these guidelines on the Stay Safe page of the website.

28 August 2020: Tiverton Gym is re-opening on Thursday 10 September. Student memberships will be available to purchase online from 1 September.

21 August 2020: We now encourage you to wear a face covering when queuing outside Sport & Fitness, and making your way to your session. You do not need to wear a face covering whilst exercise, unless you would prefer to. If you have a medical exemption from wearing a face covering generally, you will not be required to wear one in Sport & Fitness either.

17 August 2020: Classes and badminton courts are now available at Sport & Fitness. Please note, only members can book and play badminton. You may play badminton with one guest, but they must also be a member of Sport & Fitness. 23 July 2020: Our gym, pool and squash courts are re-opening on Monday 10 August!

On Thursday 9 July, the UK Government announced that indoor leisure facilities, including gyms and swimming pools, could re-open from Saturday 25 July. This was extremely welcome news, and following the University’s permission, we will plan to re-open the pool, gym and squash courts on Monday 10 August.

Classes will resume at Sport & Fitness from Monday 17 August, so in the meantime, we will continue to run a virtual class timetable, available by joining the Virtual Sport & Fitness Club Facebook group.

All other activities such as swimming lessons, badminton, climbing, outdoor sport and junior activities are awaiting a confirmed re-start date; we will share this with you as soon as we are able to.

9 July 2020: We welcome today’s Government announcement allowing gyms and swimming pools to re-open from 25 July.

The UoB Sport & Fitness team have been working for some time on re-opening plans that put the safety and wellbeing of our members and staff as of utmost importance. Once we have the green light from the University, we can start to roll out that plan, which will start with unfurloughing and training staff, thoroughly cleaning every bit of the building and its contents, and putting required safety measures in place prior to opening. We will keep you informed of progress via email and social media, and can’t wait to welcome you back.

3 July 2020: All community and staff members should have now received an email about letting our team know when you wish to restart your membership. If you are in this category but have not received an email from us, please contact our team on

30 June 2020: Today is the deadline for student members to request their refund (returning students can also opt for their membership to be rolled forwards to next academic year). If you have any enquiries relating to student refunds, please contact

22 April 2020: Join us on Sunday 26 April for the 2.6 Challenge, a national effort to raise money for UK charities who will suffer financially due to Covid-19. As the London Marathon was due to be this Sunday, and they currently hold the record for the most money raised for a single day event (£67million), 2.6 challenges all over the country are helping to contribute to the goal of beating this target, all around the theme of ‘2.6’ or ’26’.

On Sunday, we are hosting two dedicated classes: GRIT at 10am, and Pilates at 11am, both 26 minutes each, and we invite you to join us. Simply access the class videos through our Facebook group, and participate, donate to a charity of choice if you can, and share your progress on the group!

We look forward to seeing your successes!

20 April 2020: The Sport & Fitness team are back working remotely from today, however, working from home does mean we are not able to access all of the usual systems so the extent to which we can solve your enquiry may be limited whilst the club is closed. Thank you for your patience and we hope to be able to see you soon.

9 April 2020: Visit the Virtual Sport & Fitness Facebook group for workouts, classes, blogs and expert advice to keep you active over the Easter break. 24 March 2020: Our new Facebook group is now live, bringing our member community together, virtually! Over the coming weeks, we will be sharing workout tips, blogs, live videos and everything in-between, many created by our Sport & Fitness team. This is also a platform for members to share their own content and we welcome contributions. We hope you find it useful. Join the club on Facebook.

23 March 2020: We are aware that many members have queries about memberships. Please know that we are working through all the emails as quickly as possible, but until we re-open and know the extent of the closure, there are limitations on what we can process. 17 March 2020: The University have decided to close Tiverton Gym at 2pm today in order to combine staff and cleaning resources across our two gyms. We apologise for the short notice. You will be able to use the gym at Sport & Fitness (on the main University campus) until that closes, which is currently expected on Friday 27 March, although we are monitoring the situation closely and this date may also be brought forward. It is currently unknown how long the Sport & Fitness club and Tiverton Gym will remain closed for. If you have any further questions, please contact:

16 March 2020: Due to the concerns surrounding Coronavirus (COVID-19), the University have decided that UoB Sport & Fitness and Tiverton Gym will be closed temporarily from 27 March 2020. We are monitoring the national situation closely as it is developing rapidly; we will be in contact again if this date is brought forwards. Members will be contacted directly via email.
