Develop new skills, find new passions


Set yourself a new challenge to Try A Sport. You will learn new skills, meet new training partners and hopefully discover your new sporting passion!

With lots of sports to choose from, we offer courses to add variety to your workout routine. Equipment will be provided, all you need to bring is the motivation to discover, develop and achieve.

All courses run for 10 weeks and are taught by experienced coaches who will tailor the progression to your pace. All sessions run term time only, but they are available to all adult members and non-members, so whether you’re a student, staff or community member you can try a new sport at Sport & Fitness.

Try A Sport is the perfect way to get involved in many different sports

Sport Descriptions

Archery is a popular skill based sport open to all abilities. This progressive course will introduce new skills and techniques enabling you to progress at your pace.

BadmintonAdvanced is for those who regularly play Badminton, or who have previously completed a Try a Sport Badminton course. More advanced game play, tactics and shots (serves, clears, smashes, drives and drops) will be covered. Those participating will have the opportunity to play in a friendly Campus League Badminton tournament towards the end of the course.

Boxing is a combat sport taught within a safe environment and teaches valuable technique and discipline. It builds strength and cardiovascular endurance as well as self-esteem. It is great for increasing fitness, stamina, agility and strength and will challenge you to new limits!

Kickboxing is a great way to learn self-defence whilst improving balance, coordination, flexibility and stamina. This course teaches you a combination of martial arts techniques and athletic drills and will strengthen and tone your whole body.

Judo is a modern martial art, combat and Olympic sport created in Japan. The objective is to either throw or take down an opponent to the ground, immobilise or otherwise subdue an opponent with a pin, or force an opponent to submit with a joint lock or a choke. Open to all abilities!

Squash – Beginner is for those who have never played before or just got started. The course will teach the correct technique and basic skills to play a good game.

Squash – Intermediate is for experienced players looking to further improve their skills. This course will enable players to follow set routines and conditioned practices, in addition to gaining full knowledge of all rules and becoming competent match players.

Volleyball (not running in Spring 2020) is a popular, enjoyable team sport which will also build on body strength and cardiovascular fitness. The course will teach fundamentals, strategy and technique covering passing, serving, spiking and setting.

Weightlifting (not running in Spring 2020) is a strength-based training sport that is fun and suited to most sports and fitness goals. The course will cover some basic strength training principles such as learning and developing basic, daily functional movement patterns and applying them to Olympic weightlifting techniques.
