STAY SAFE AT SPORT & FITNESS

The safety of our members and staff is our priority, so we’ve made some changes to our facilities and procedures to ensure you can continue safely on your fitness journey with confidence.

Please ensure you read the guidelines below carefully for information on how to stay safe when using Sport & Fitness.

Separate stay safe information for Tiverton Gym is available.

How you can keep yourself and others safe

Stay home if you’re unwell. Please don’t come to the club if you have any of the COVID-19 symptoms.

Pre-book your session. Only those who have booked a gym, swim or squash session will be able to enter the building. You can book online via the website or via the UB Sport Fitness app (available on Apple and Android). You will not be able to book at reception. Please note, you will not be permitted access into the club if you are more than five minutes late, this is so we can manage capacities and social distancing in the corridors and stairwells.

Use the NHS Covid-19 app to scan the Sport & Fitness QR code on arrival. QR codes are located on signage outside of Sport & Fitness, please scan before you enter the building.

Arrive on time and ready to work out. Please come in your workout clothes, or wear your swimwear underneath your clothes if you’re visiting the pool, as the changing rooms will not be available. Please only bring a small drawstring bag for your belongings as lockers will not be in use.

Face coverings are mandatory at all times except when you are exercising. This includes when making your way to and from a session, and in corridors and stairwells. We advise you also wear it when moving between stations in the gym. You will be refused entry into Sport & Fitness if you are not wearing a face covering or have an exemption.

Clean equipment after use. Please help protect yourself and fellow members by cleaning the gym and class equipment before and after use, with the cleaning products provided. Focus on areas you have touched such as handles and screens. Return all gym equipment and cleaning products to where they belong so other members do not have to search around the gym.

ADVICE, GUIDELINES & EXPECTATIONS

  • You can book up to seven days in advance up to 5 minutes before the session starts
  • You can cancel a session at any time of the day up to a minimum of one hour before the session start time
  • You can only book or cancel online via the website or the UBSport & Fitness app (available on the App Store or Google Play)
  • Bookings cannot be made over the phone or at reception
  • There are three bookable gym areas: the upper gym floor with cardio and resistance machines; the free weights gym (lower floor); and Munrow Arena 3 which has a range of cardio and resistance machines plus a small selection of light free weights. Each area is bookable separately and you will not be able to move between the two during a session
  • Pool sessions will be booked for a specific lane (slow, medium or fast in the shallow or deep end) and you will not be able to change lanes unless instructed by a member of staff
  • You can book one session per day for each activity included in your membership with the exception of classes. • All booking slots have gaps in-between to allow for cleaning, no members will be allowed in the area during that time

  • If you are attending two consecutive bookings and there are less than 15 minutes before the end time of the first and start time of the second, you may make your way directly from one location to the other, following the one-way system. If there are more than 15 minutes between the sessions, you will need to exit the building and rejoin the queue outside to ensure you do not receive a £10 no-show penalty fine.

This will also ensure you are only queuing for five minutes. Please note, if you are booked onto the first session of the day (6am on weekdays or 7am on weekends), you will not be able to access the club until your session start time as it is outside of our operational hours.

  • You can bring one partner to play squash with, however they must be a member of your household or support bubble, and also be an adult squash member of Sport & Fitness. Current England Squash guidelines do not allow you to play with anyone outside of your household. Your squash partner must also book the session (free of charge) in order to be able to swipe into the club at the specified time. This will not count as their one permitted booking for that day, as they are the guest/partner and not the lead bookee.
  • Don’t wipe your hands on the wall
  • Players are not allowed to shout or raise their voice
  • We encourage people to play squash on their own if they do not have a member of their household or support bubble to play with

Badminton

  • From Monday 17 May, Badminton is available to members and non-members of Sport & Fitness. Doubles are also permitted. Back-to-back bookings are also available.
  • Juniors are permitted to play in club / coached sessions / recreational activity / localised junior tournaments; and 1-1 coaching is permitted.
  • There will not be any equipment available to hire, so players should bring their own.
  • Booking can be made through the website, so players will need their email associated with their Sport & Fitness account and PIN. You and your second player must be a member of Sport & Fitness to book and play.

BOOK

  • Access will only be granted to Sport & Fitness with a valid membership card. Both juniors and accompanying parent/guardians must have their membership card to swipe in and out of the building. We will not be able to permit you access into the building for your lesson without a valid membership card for each individual person. Each person must swipe their own card (or a parent can swipe their junior’s card, then their own), but each card must be swiped to ensure your attendance is logged. If you do not have a membership card or have lost it, please complete the form on the swimming lessons page of the website, and we will arrange a new/replacement card for you to collect at reception before your first lesson. Please note that there is a charge of £10 for replacement membership cards.
  • Arrive up to 10 minutes before your session start time. You will be asked to queue in the relevant area for your activity outside the Sport & Fitness club, then a Staff Member will invite you in for your session.
  • There is a new one-way route for those accessing lessons. Please watch the video on the new route, and process for removing outdoor footwear.
  • Swimmers need to arrive ‘beach-ready’, with swimwear underneath their clothes as there are no changing rooms available. Both children and adults that are required to be in the water with their children (Ducklings and Stage 1) need to arrive with their swimwear underneath their clothes. After the lesson, swimmers will be required to towel dry and put their clothes (or a dressing gown / onesie) over their swimming costume, and exit the building promptly. Where it is necessary for a child to change before leaving the building (e.g. they travel to lessons using public transport), there will be the opportunity to use allocated changing rooms on request. In order to request use of a changing room, please email us at swimming@sportandfitness.bham.ac.uk in advance of your first lesson. On poolside, the lead teacher will allocate you changing room space. Children and their parents in Ducklings and Stage 1 will also be allowed to use a changing room without needing to request one.
  • Face coverings are mandatory except whilst swimming. Unless you have a general exemption, juniors over the age of 11 and all adults must wear a face covering except whilst exercising.
  • Only one parent / guardian is allowed on poolside. This is to reduce the capacity in the pool area and facilitate social distancing. Parents / guardians on poolside will be required to wear a face covering at all times, unless you have a general exemption. Where it is unavoidable, parents can have siblings of the child swimming sat on poolside, but they must remain with the parent at all times. Please remember, juniors 8 and under must be accompanied by an adult on poolside. Juniors age 9 – 13 do not need to be accompanied on poolside, however, please wait either outside Sport & Fitness or in the car park if you are not on poolside. Juniors over the age of 14 can attend lessons independently.
  • Ducklings and Stage 1 classes will require a parent in the water with the child. This will help younger, less confident children with social distancing in lessons, and make the transition back to lessons easier, as teachers will not be in the water with them.
  • If swimmers are required to self-isolate or test positive for Covid-19, you will need to complete our Covid-19 Notification Form. The form can be found on the swimming lessons webpage. Please note that you will need to provide evidence.
  • If you are parking in the Sport & Fitness multi-storey carpark, you no longer need to take a ticket. Instead, please swipe your junior’s card through the card reader and this will let you in to the car park. You will need to swipe the card to exit from the carpark too. Please note, parking will only be free for 20 minutes before and after your lesson time.
  • Top up payments can only be made using the Home Portal. To reduce social clustering and manage capacities in reception, you will not be able to make top up payments for lessons at reception. If you have not signed up to, or do not have access to the Home Portal, please send us an email at swimming@sportandfitness.bham.ac.uk and we will send you instructions on how to sign up.
  • Watch the video to find out what safety measures are in place for swimming lessons.
