Founded in 2001, the Birmingham Lions Ice Hockey Club is a British University Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA) affiliated club based at the University of Birmingham, representing Higher Education institutions in Birmingham (University of Birmingham, University College Birmingham, Birmingham City University, Newman University, Aston University).

We compete at all levels and cater for all abilities from those that have never skated before to those that have played for years! We pride ourselves on being inclusive club that has experienced great success in previous years.

We have sessions for both beginners and experienced players and also run regular socials where members can get to know each other and bond as a team. No matter your hockey or skating ability, anyone will be welcomed to our club, even if you just want to join us for the socials!

How to get involved

REGISTER INTEREST

A proudly diverse and inclusive club, 48% of our registered players were female in the 2019/20 season, despite traditionally being a male dominated sport. We also have many players who are openly part of the LGBTQ+ community as well as having a large proportion of international players. These strides we have made as a club to create a diverse and inclusive team has led to us being nominated for the UBSport ‘Pride Award’ for 2 years running.

The membership fee is £55 and this registers you with the league and provides insurance to play matches and train. Training costs for team members is £100 per term for 11 sessions. Beginners pay £10 per session for the first term which includes transport to and from the rink and skate hire.

3 skills this sport will give you:

Teamwork
Communication
Perseverance

Please note that on top of the club fee there is a £16 fee that covers personal accident insurance when training or competing for the University, access to free cross-training sessions such as circuits and yoga, as well as a contribution to the costs of affiliation to various national governing bodies.  This fee is only payable once so if you did decide to join a second club then you would not need to pay a second fee.
