British Champs Swimming Success

UBSport Swimming club members Jess Shaw and Matt Rogers dominated at last month’s British Swimming Championships, qualifying into the senior finals.

For some, Easter wasn’t just about eating chocolate or revising – two of our swimmers spent it in Glasgow, competing in the British Championship between 16 April and 21 April. This event was also being used as a selection for the Team GB trials ahead of the World Championship in Korea in July, so the pressure was already on and the competition already stacked with world-class competition, demonstrating the strength of British swimming as we approach the meet in the summer. Our swimmers performed incredibly well, qualifying into the senior finals and bringing UoB swimming to new heights. They also broke six club records in three events in the process!

Jess Shaw, racing against European Champion Georgia Davies,  finished 7th in the open final, lowering her personal best in heats to 29.10, and again in the finals to 28.97 – just 0.54 outside the medal positions! – and breaking the club record twice. Jess also made the transition finals on the 100m backstroke, taking her PB down to 1.02.51 from 1.02.83 in the final, meaning she finished in 14th position overall. matt swimming

Matt Rogers swam 2.19.83 in the heats to make 8th place in the world-class A final, and 5th in the under-23 age group to set another new club record of 2.19.53. Plus, Matt was swimming against world ranked swimmers James Wilby , Ross Murdoch and Craig Benson – so no easy feat!

Both Matt and Jess will next race in the British Summer Nationals in July, so we will be keeping everything crossed for the next stage of trials for our UoB Swimmers. Good luck, both!
