Quartet of Athletes Selected for World University Games

Great Britain will take an Athletics squad of 22 competitors to Naples for the World University Games next month, including four athletes connected to the University’s athletics club, showcasing the impressive work done by the department here at UoB.

Mari Smith (800m), following an impressive season at the Europeans in Glasgow, is the only current student that will compete, and was recently named University of Birmingham’s Sports Person of the Year. Second up is Mark Peace (3000m steeplechase), who graduated last year but has been training with the University squad whilst balancing part-time work. Mike Wilson (1500m), has been studying at the University of New Mexico in the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) system since graduating from UoB two years ago, and the final athlete is Rebecca Murray (Half Marathon), who is also a graduate and ex-sports scholar.

This is not only fantastic for the athletes, but a brilliant example of how Birmingham helps its athletes. Mari showcases how she has benefitted from the brilliant support of the scholarship programme to reach the pinnacle of student sport, where Mike and Mark have accessed and maximised the club level of support beneath it to aid their athletic progress.

Rounding off the Birmingham contingent in Naples will be Luke Gunn (Head of Athletics) and Jade Surman, who will be part of the five-person management team of the GB squad, making the UoB representation in the GB team in Italy a very high percentage!

Congratulations to all selected who have been rewarded for their dedication, highlighting the talent off both staff and students at UoB!
