XpLosION Preview: The first Super Series event of the year starts here!

With XpLosION coming up in less than three days, UBSport caught up with the Birmingham Lions ahead of Saturday’s game against the Swansea Titans.

After the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s XpLosION means more than ever, not only for the players but for the whole university.

Jason Parker, the Lions’ President, expressed his excitement for the upcoming game, and indeed the season. “XpLosION is the largest American Football event in the UK,” he said. “It’s not just an American Football game, it’s an event in its entirety.”

The game on Saturday will be the season opener for the Lions and so a win could be vital for their campaign this year. As five-time national champions, the Lions will be hoping to secure a sixth title this season – a strong start might just be the key to that.

Even for those who know nothing about American Football, XpLosION has something for everyone to enjoy. Saturday’s event will see a whole range of food and merchandise stalls, featuring the Digbeth Dining Club and Fleetstreet Vintage, as well as a half-time performance from the Birmingham Pussycats.

When asked about having fans back at XpLosION, Parker had no doubt for what it meant for the players. “It means everything having that sort of energy behind the team,” he told UBSport. “Having everyone down here gives us a little drive. At the end of the day, all of the fans are a part of the team as well.”

Luca Cicale, a first team player, agreed. “It’s a massive privilege to be honest,” Cicale added. “It’s absolutely fantastic that I can get my family and friends to come down and watch it.”

The appreciation for the crowd was definitely evident throughout the team, especially since last year’s XpLosION was cancelled due to the pandemic.

To come and watch the Birmingham Lions, head down to the Bournbrook Pitches on Saturday 6 November at 5pm. Don’t miss it!
