From Lecture Halls to the Australian Open: Birmingham Alumni Shine
When Ben, Chloe, and Dan first met in 2019 during their Sports, Physical Education, and Coaching degree at the University of Birmingham, they had no idea that their shared passion for sport would one day take them across the globe. Fast forward to 2025, and the trio found themselves working together at one of the biggest sporting events in the world – the Australian Open.
From Edgbaston to Melbourne
While studying at Birmingham, all three developed a keen interest in sporting events and gained valuable experience working at the prestigious Rothesay Classic Birmingham tournaments, hosted at Edgbaston Priory Tennis Club. This early exposure ignited a love for behind-the-scenes event operations and set them on a path towards an unforgettable opportunity.
After graduating—Chloe and Dan in 2022, and Ben in 2023 following a year abroad in Germany—it was Dan who first made the leap, securing a role at the Australian Open. Recognising how much Chloe and Ben had enjoyed their experience at Edgbaston Priory, he shared the contact details of the Melbourne tournament organisers. Inspired by his success, they both applied, successfully passed a group interview, and soon joined Dan in Australia for the January 2025 tournament.
Living and Working at a Grand Slam
Swapping Selly Oak for the sun-soaked city of Melbourne, the three friends rented an apartment together for the duration of the tournament, fully immersing themselves in the excitement of one of tennis’ biggest stages.
Chloe took on a key role at the practice desk, liaising with players and coaches to organise and adjust their training schedules. Reflecting on the experience, she said:
“Working at the Australian Open was incredible—an extraordinary sporting event that I feel both grateful and privileged to have been a part of. I learned so much, and sharing the experience with friends from home made it even more special.”
Meanwhile, Ben and Dan worked in court servicing, ensuring the courts were in top condition for play. Their days started early, checking for any damage and preparing the surfaces before matches began. They were also the first point of contact for players during games, assisting with essential tasks such as restringing rackets and providing support wherever needed.
Having worked on tournaments at Edgbaston Priory, both were used to grass courts, but Melbourne’s hard courts presented a new set of challenges.
Dan summed up the experience, saying:
“This year, I managed to persuade Chloe and Ben to join me down under and enjoy the January sunshine. We were complete strangers when we first met at university, which makes it even more magical to see how our friendships have grown, taking us all the way to Australia! It’s surreal to think that in just a few years, we’ve gone from sitting in lecture halls at UoB to sitting courtside at one of the biggest sporting events in the world.”
Ben described the opportunity as “unforgettable,” adding:
“Working with two of my closest friends from Birmingham at such an iconic event was surreal. It made the experience even better.”
An Inspirational Journey
The journey of Ben, Chloe, and Dan is a fantastic example of how seizing opportunities at university can lead to incredible career experiences. Their story highlights the value of getting involved in events, gaining hands-on experience, and embracing every chance to build connections in the sporting world.
For current University of Birmingham students with aspirations to work in major sporting events, their advice is simple: take every opportunity that comes your way, say yes to new experiences, and don’t be afraid to take a leap—because you never know where it might take you!
Who knows? The next time you step into a lecture theatre at UoB, you could be sitting next to your future colleagues, preparing for an adventure that takes you around the world.
