Flying the Flag: Megan Costall Selected for World University Games

University of Birmingham archer Megan Costall is set to take centre stage on the international circuit after earning selection for Team GB at the World University Games – and she’s already making her mark.

For Megan, this moment is more than just an exciting milestone; it’s the culmination of years of dedication, development, and determination. “It always feels amazing to be selected to represent GB,” she says. “This is my first year competing as a Senior athlete, so it’s even more special!”

Rising to the International Stage

Megan’s selection marks a major step forward in a journey that began back in 2021, when she first represented Britain in youth international competitions.

Already with three team medals to her name, her ambition has always been clear: individual success on the global stage. And she’s achieved just that, recently claiming silver at the Berlin Open Indoor Championships – a standout moment following an intense indoor season.

“I was really determined to win an individual medal internationally,” she explains. “I worked really hard in the lead up to the season, and it’s been such a confidence boost heading into the outdoor competitions.”

A new technique, a new chapter

In the build-up to the Games, Megan has been fine-tuning her performance – including adopting a new shooting technique. “It’s feeling really strong,” she says. “I’m excited to test it in the pressure of competition.”

There’s little time to rest, though. With the outdoor season just beginning, Megan is juggling training, competitions across the country, and international representation. She’ll be competing in Antalya, Turkey next week for the first leg of the Grand Prix – the perfect preparation for the World University Games.

Support on and off the field

Balancing elite sport and academic commitments is no small feat, but Megan credits much of her progress to the environment at the University of Birmingham. “The University has been incredible at supporting my learning and athletic journey,” she says. “The S&C support and the welcoming sporting community have made such a difference.”

And it’s not just the physical side of sport that’s being developed – Megan is also a strong advocate for the mental side of performance. “I’ve found Sport Psychology to be a really key asset. It’s helped me take my performance to the next level, and I’d encourage every student-athlete to make use of the support available to them.”

Eyes on the prize

Describing the Games as “a mini Olympics”, Megan is eagerly anticipating the experience of competing alongside some of the world’s best. “Many of the athletes have actually competed at the Olympics,” she explains. “So I’m really, really excited – and hopefully I’ll be coming home with a medal!”

With such passion and positivity, it’s no surprise Megan has words of encouragement for fellow student-athletes: “Take advantage of the support that’s out there – whether it’s training, psychology, or even just being part of a community that understands the demands of balancing sport and study. It really can make all the difference.”

Megan, we’re so proud of you and can’t wait to see what you achieve this summer. Good luck at the Games – the whole UoB Sport family is cheering you on!
