Time to thrive: Inclusive sport making moves at UoB

At the University of Birmingham, we believe that sport is for everyone – and the recent success of our wheelchair basketball sessions is proof that inclusive opportunities can make a big impact.

That impact was officially recognised at this year’s Campus Services Awards, where Active Residences proudly picked up the Innovation Award for introducing a wheelchair basketball programme to the University for the first time.

A proud moment for the team

Charlotte Kulidžan-Bolton, Active Residences Coordinator, was full of praise for everyone involved in getting the initiative off the ground:

“I honestly couldn’t be prouder of our team for bringing wheelchair basketball to UoB, and it’s really great that the University has recognised all their hard work through the Campus Services Awards.

Huge shout out to our incredible student activators who run these sessions and who have made them so popular.

Due to the success of these sessions, we’ve secured £13,000 in funding for our very own multi-sport wheelchairs – and they’re arriving soon!

Having our own chairs means we can do so much more than just wheelchair basketball taster sessions through Active Residences. The future of inclusive sport at UoB is looking very hopeful and the possibilities are endless. I can’t wait to see where we go from here.

If you haven’t tried wheelchair basketball yet, keep an eye out for sessions and activities in the coming months and give it a go – I promise you’ll love it!”

Sport, wellbeing and a sense of belonging

The programme is a brilliant example of how sport can support student wellbeing, build a sense of community, and help people thrive during their time in University accommodation. It’s also a testament to what can be achieved when passionate staff and students work together with a shared goal in mind.

What’s next for inclusive sport at UoB?

The new multi-sport wheelchairs will make their official debut at UoB Xtra on Wednesday 11 June and again at the 125 Community Festival on Saturday 21 June, with new six-week courses launching shortly after. Whether you’re a complete beginner or just curious to try something different, there’s never been a better time to get involved.

Active Residences continues to go from strength to strength – and this latest award is just the beginning.
