ATHLETICS & CROSS COUNTRY
At Birmingham we offer a wealth of opportunities for you to get involved in Athletics and Cross Country. Whether you are competing at the top level, just want to enjoy it recreationally, or even try athletics for the first time, there is something for everyone.
We have a dedicated club for social running at Birmingham called Cool Runnings.
Cool Runnings’ focus is on participation running in a pressure-free environment, helping you pursue your passion for running at your own pace. Training sessions cater to all abilities and can be as competitive or as casual as you like.
Participation, improvement and enjoyment are at the heart of the club.
The Athletics and Cross Country club, partnered with Cool Runnings, is one of the largest and most successful clubs at the University of Birmingham.
The club provides a number of sessions that are included as part of its membership, and training programs that are tailored to individuals depending on their event and experience. With access to state-of-the-art facilities and expert staff, our club caters for individuals who are new to the sport, through to international athletes. The club competes in BUCS Cross Country, Indoors and Outdoors Championships and athletes from the club also compete in regional Cross Country Leagues and a host of National Relays events. There are three or four sessions a week, alongside group runs, strength and conditioning and circuits.
Members are also encouraged to take advantage of all the free sports club sessions at the Sport & Fitness club including foot drills, yoga and spinning. There are two key highlights of the year in the Athletics and Cross Country Club. For the Cross Country runners, it is BUCS Cross Country, and for the track athletes, BUCS Outdoors is the highlight of the calendar.
The University of Birmingham sport’s performance centre offers specialist sport science and medicine support for developing athletic performance. Our dedicated team of experts work closely with athletes to create an integrated training and support plan which benefits from the University’s leading sport science research.
With access to state-of-the-art facilities and expert staff, our performance athletes have access to further support, including strength and conditioning, and sports physiology and nutrition.
